about

I was excited to compose the music for this feature film, which follows the life of painter Edvard Munch with the protagonist played by different actors in each of the four chapters of his life. Strings and piano are featured throughout with electronic and guitar-driven ambient soundscapes, juxtaposing soaring lyricism with edgy textures to evoke a feeling of expansiveness but with an undercurrent of unease. I employed an off-center rhythmic pattern in many of the quieter moments of music, such as Hallucinations and Echoes; and I used paintbrushes on the strings inside of my upright piano to create sounds for some of the darker, more threatening scenes. Swimming, which plays under an intimate scene between Munch and Milly Thaulow, features solo violin over a quietly repeating harmony; and Onward brings the film to a euphoric close, with frenetic piano chords and full orchestra, as we see Munch creating the first sketches for his painting, “The Scream.”
