about

I’ve often heard J.S. Bach referred to as the ‘father’ of Western Music. Not surprising, as his influence has been so profound and far-reaching on so many composers and musicians who followed, from Mozart and Beethoven to Aaron Jay Kernis and Philip Glass, to Bill Evans and Thom Yorke.

This is the playlist—a disc that invites listeners to consider a new perspective on Bach’s Partita in D minor, by offering it the context of four new works by composers who looked to the past for inspiration.

Along side the iconic Bach Partita, I hope it will be possible for listeners to hear these distinctive American voices in a fresh and approachable way. The range of these pieces runs the whole palette, from Kevin’s stunning mix of ‘Bach meets Appalachian-fiddle’ in Arches to the searching lines and driving power chords of Randall’s No Axe to Grind, and the brilliant and crazed passion of Daniel’s Double Aria to Mark’s Caprice No. 6, all brightness, radiance, and energy.

These are the arches, juxtaposing old and new, connecting the past to the present.
